A recipe for acne¹

Acne has a HUGE genetic component (thanks, ma and pa) and can also be affected by hormone levels, stress levels, diet and nutrition, sleep quality, external friction from clothing or sports equipment, hair and cosmetic products, and certain medications.²⁻³

Acne can present as:

  • Papules and Pustules

    • Also referred to as inflamed or inflammatory acne.

    • These breakouts are what most people likely envision in their head when they think of pimples, pink and red irritated bumps.

    • Papules and pustules can be also found in Acne Rosacea, or sub-type 2 Rosacea, but they are not caused by the same conditions.

  • Comedones

    • Also referred to as non-inflamed or non-inflammatory acne.

      • This type includes:

    • Open comedones, aka blackheads

    • Closed comedones, aka whiteheads

    • Comedones are often seen in Acne Cosmetica, aka acne caused by makeup and/or hair products.

  • Nodules and Cysts

    • Also referred to nodular acne or nodularcystic acne.

    • These lesions are commonly associated with deep, painful hormonal acne along the jawline and chin.

    • These breakouts can affect the body in addition to the face. Common areas are the back, underarms, and groin.

So how do we get rid of breakouts?

At Sarah Moon Facial Studio, we specialize in helping clients clear their skin as part of our Acne Program. Viewing the skin through a scientific, corneotherapy-based lens our Acne Specialists address acne breakouts in these 3 ways:

1 - Ensure skin barrier health.

Properly hydrate the skin so skin cells become less 'sticky'. This allows for healthy skin turnover and, overall, happier skin.⁴

2 - Increase cell turnover.

Address the sluggish turnover you're experiencing and get those follicles healthy and clear with the use of products containing ingredients like Mandelic Acid, Lactic Acid, and Vitamin A. We also check to make sure your personal care products ( ie. haircare, makeup, and toothpaste) aren't contributing to your breakouts and don't have any major pore-clogging ingredients.

3 - Tackle acne-causing bacteria.

Depending on the type of acne you have, utilize anti-bacterial ingredients such as Benzoyl Peroxide, Azelaic Acid, and Cinnamon Bark.⁵

Acne is a multi-faceted skin challenge and is almost always a 'perfect storm' of contributing factors.

This is where working with an acne expert becomes incredibly helpful in establishing a treatment plan customized to your unique skin needs. We will dive into everything that could be contributing to your breakouts and walk you through the clearing process. In addition to Sarah's Acne Program training, our Estheticians are Certified Acne Experts with Face Reality Skincare.
